How the Porsche’s Legendary 911 Evolved

With an emphasis on enabling peak vintage car performance, Perma-Tune offers a full suite of ignition modules, coils and distributors. The Perma-Tune team’s period-correct approach extends to the late 1960s, and a close affiliation between Perma-Tune and the automobile manufacturer Porsche developed soon after. Indeed, the American-made Blue Box Perma-Tune module of the early 1970s was subsequently exported to Germany and integrated into Porsche 911 manufacturing processes.

The Porsche 911 has its roots in the Volkswagen “Peoples’ Car”, which was developed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1940s. It was first oriented toward the performance market by his son “Ferry” Porsche, who created the Type 64 race car for a distance event that was to have spanned Berlin and Rome (but was never held). Employing an elongated Beetle chassis and featuring an upgraded Beetle four-cylinder engine, the Type 64 was given its own chassis by the late 1940s, but kept the Beetle’s air-cooled, rear-engine form. The emphasis was on a superior handling sports car for the road, and generations to follow included the 356A, 356B and 356C, as well as the racing RS550 Spyder. This was not dissimilar to Ferrari’s evolution, with the distinction being that the Italian company’s focus was on racing first and performance roadsters second.

Introduced to the public in 1965, the first Porsche 911 debuted its unique design at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963. A major innovation was the air-cooled and rear-mounted flat-six engine. This engine type took the name “Boxer,” in recognition of how the twin-banked cylinders seemed to be taking aim at each other. Interestingly, there was a generational shift at work as well: just as Ferdinand had allowed Ferry to take the reins with racing designs decades earlier, Ferry allowed Ferdinand Alexander (FA) Porsche to create the Porsche 911 body design.
